Rainbow Family Tree

tell your story - change the world!

My daughter's take on gay marriage and religious fundamentalism... and the homophobia that lives and breathes as a result of too many of us doing nothing. Read about the context at my blog on www.rainbowfamilytree.com... and if you’re inspired to act make your voice heard at www.australianmarriageequality.com. Please circulate the story widely and let us know on our Rainbow-Family-Tree facebook page what discussions unfold because of it!

Great work on this digital story. Left me wiping my eyes at the computer on a Monday morning. Very courageous of you, your daughter and your family. I have posted a link on my facebook page.

Hi Kim - that's scary to hear... it feels like education is where these issues are particularly hot right now! We have several teachers on this site who have a range of strategies around being 'out' or dealing with homophobia in schools. You should do a blog post to get a debate rolling! For instance when you say 'not allowed' - is that an explicit DECS thing or particular to your school... or something less formal, but equally silencing?

I can understand why she did not do her speech. I'm a teacher, and in DECS schools I'm not allowed to mention the fact that I am in a same sex relationship - even though my collegues make public their relationships, wedding plans, families,... dates, etc. I cannot display family photos on my wall as they do. I have to lie when students ask me questions. If I can't even do that, how could she feel safe to talk about her mums?

I saw you guys there on the day, have some photos if you would like them :)

Love it, Sonja. Well done. I've shared it on fb (in fact multiple times by mistake) and also with a teacher at my school.

Thanks for your feedback Sue... I think my daughter will be very affirmed by your comments... I'd love to hear more about your experiences of life and schooling in Alice? Also have you read Sophie's recent posts about 'Invisibility in Primary Schools'... any anecdotes to swap?

Thank you - our family can really relate to this.  We have two little girls aged 9yrs and 6 yrs and school can be challenging.  Your gorgeous wee gal has a big brave heart and I'm sure with your love and support will present many, many speeches in the future - whether to one person or many and her voice will be heard.  Thank you for this insightful clip.
