Daddy’s Little Girl – by Riki Owens-Bennett

My story captures how the relationship between my father and I has changed over the last few years. I have travelled from fearing him and being unable to be myself around him, to now having his support and experiencing his pride in who I am. Now I am open and honest about being a lesbian, my relationship with my partner… even to the point of talking about marrying my partner and having children. This is a response to a surprising yet welcome change in my father; one I'm very happy about. I made my story as a tribute to my dad because I am proud of him and how far he has come in the past few years.

The main difficulty I encountered while making this story was finding the most appropriate images. Next time I would prefer to take my own photographs so then the images will depict exactly what I want them to. The other concern I had was not making the story tone sad or negative, but one more of optimism and joy because that's how I now feel. But, in order to do this, I had to provide the background of my relationship with Dad and I didn't want to 'beat around the bush'.

I'm a very visual person and I loved the idea of short digital stories that are straight to the point, allowing me to communicate my concerns to others. I’d like to think the message is something along the lines of 'never give up'… but I also know there are some situations where things may never change for people. I hope that when others see my story, they will be encouraged to keep some hope alive.
