tell your story - change the world!

Janaya used to warn prospective friends about her aboriginality and her mum's girlfriend before inviting them home... now, if they're not cool with it, they're not part of her life.

Brown Baby - by Janaya Newchurch

The story I have made means a lot to me. It show’s two aspects of my life - one side about being a proud Aboriginal woman and how society and friends react to that, and the other side is about my mum and her being a part of the gay community. These two parts of my life have made me the person I am today.

I made this story because, even if we can’t see it, there are a lot of people in my situation and I want to let them know it’s normal. You can be proud to just be yourself, to stand up for yourself and your family.

I was inspired to write my story due to the racism and homophobia that are around me constantly. Judgmental attitudes have such a huge impact on me and my family. My Mother, step mother and Father inspired me to come out and share this story with the community.

I didn’t have too many difficulties making this story but I was concerned about presenting my family and friends to the public. I hoped they would be ok about me telling people about them and using their photographs to show what I was feeling.

Hearing all the other stories in the group made me even more open minded. After writing and making mine, I am motivated to do something in society that will make a change… and hope that others can see that everything in my life is normal and we are all equal.

Great vid!!! I love what you said about if someone has a problem with 'it' then they're not a part of your life. I totally agree. I'm finishing video at the moment about my journey, but I enjoy watching other peoples' videos and hearing their stories. Thankyou.

Janaya, that is a gorgeous story. Good on you! May I just share with you that as a teacher of refugee and migrant students, I'm genuinely fascinated by the many different ways that people's cultural background is expressed in their physical appearances. Genetics is an amazing thing. I worry a little that when my partner and I have children they won't be genetically connected through their mums, but I also know that family is a lot more than just genetic connection and looking alike.
