Acceptance – by Naomi Hicks

When I first got involved in digital storytelling I was overwhelmed by how many stories I had to tell. I’m a songwriter too so it wasn’t hard to get my head around the concept – words + images + music… but it was hard to narrow it down! Eventually I chose the coming out story that I didn’t really have confidence to speak about at the time… the main idea is: just as we hope our loved ones will accept us, sometimes we need to be accepting of the journey THEY are just beginning…

The best thing was my daughter Felicity getting involved. She was so excited about recording her own little voice over bit: ‘My mum has a girlfriend and it’s fine with me!’ She was very professional!

As I was asking permission from friends and family to include photos of them in my story, some interesting, healing conversations happened. Even though some of my personal circumstances have changed since then, I’m glad I got to make a story about being proud of being both gay and aboriginal.

These are the final words from my story:

“Forgive everyone for they are infinitely learning; understand everyone for they are real… everyone then can be truly free to be themselves…”

I loved this one, too especially because of the words that are so wise and compassionate and open.
