What would you most like to change about the world that you live in?
Put an end to discrimination and homophobia so I don't have to explain what 'homophobia' means to my 5 year old.
What can you do to make it happen?
More of what I already do! Speak to parliamentarians, rally with 'family', volunteer at Uni to be a visable support for gay and lesbian students and staff, comment on blog after blog after blog under the pseudonym Two Mummies.
When you're not busy changing the world, what do you do for fun?
Read trashy lesbian fiction :-)

A New Year and a new story

Posted on February 2, 2012 at 8:11 1 Comment

Well it's a new year and I have noticed that I need to finish last years blog on my daughters IDAHO Day experience. But before I do I thought I would share with you what happened on a 'family' outing to Victor Harbor during the school hols.

Three same-sex families went to lunch at the Victor hotel....three sets of mummies with three kids between us aged 18 months, 5 years and 6 years, Riley being the oldest. There was a playroom and Riley got chatting to some slightly older…

Primary school invisibility Part 3

Posted on September 7, 2011 at 15:01 2 Comments

I realised I hadn't finished my series of blogs on trying to inject a bit of the rainbow into Riley's primary school. We last left off with the teaser of what happens when you try to bring a little bit of IDAHO to a primary school.

IDAHO day in our house has taken on much more meaning these days as Jo and I are involved in celebrations at the high school and at the Uni where I work. It is also more prominent with the push to legalise same-sex marriage so from our perspective…

Would you get Unioned?

Posted on August 30, 2011 at 16:18 10 Comments

Personally I think it is looking increasingly likely that a change in the marriage laws would be defeated in parliament. Despite wide spread support among the general public and a whole bunch of state labor party people lobbying for a big debate at the National conference in Sydney I think we will be offered the more politically pallatable option of getting civilly unioned.

So if the law is changed to allow civil unions would you want one? Would you get one? Why and why…

To Rally or not to Rally....that is the question.

Posted on August 11, 2011 at 14:07 18 Comments

Another gay marriage rally on Saturday. I remember the last one, the memories are not pleasant.

We have been attending the gay marriage rallies regularly of late. Sometimes our 6 year old daughter is with us and sometimes not. When she has not been at the rallies it has not been a conscious choice on our part more like a clash of social schedules (e.g. play dates, daddy days). But after what happened at the last rally I find myself unsure of whether to bring her along on…

Hi Sophie... Riley and Rosie sound like they'd get along very well! She's been known to respond to 'That's so Gay!' with 'Oh! (disappointed face) I didn't know you were homophobic!'. When the offending child inevitably asks what the word means she smiles smugly and says 'You'll have to ask a teacher or your parents...'. At least that's how I imagine it plays out... lately she's been getting a little more 'cool' so that might mean sitting on it.

I really admire the work you're doing both at Riley's school and Unley High. I think there are some useful tips and ideas there for lots of RFT members (both here and on facebook). Do you reckon you could do a cut and paste so that it appears as a blog entry here? Then you can easily share on facebook and twitter if you want... It's gotta help circulating these strategies far and wide... but I'm still pondering - aren't we mostly preaching to the converted. How do we target the many moderate Australians who just haven't spent much time thinking about all this stuff. Can we use social networking to help? I'd love to hear what the Unley High students have to say about it all... and great seeing so many of them there on Saturday too!

Hi Sophie... thanks for joining us here. Always interested to know what new members think of the space and what you're looking for? Hope you can participate when you feel like it! And I really, really hope you don't have to have that conversation about homophobia with your daughter for a while... but my daughter might be a useful fount of wisdom if ever you need ; )
